Review: Bosch GLM 80 + R 60

I first saw Bosch’s new GLM 80 at CES early this year. I was intrigued and wanted to get some hands on with the device. Bosch was kind enough to send a review unit my way. The GLM 80 is a laser distance and angle measuring device that hosts a plethora of innovative features. For those of you who haven’t heard of Bosch; Robert Bosch GmbH is one of the world’s largest suppliers of automotive components and has been around for more than 127 years! Here in the US, Robert Bosch Tool Corporation has brands such as Hawera, Skil, Dremel, RotoZip, Freud, Vermont American and is one of the largest portable tool manufacturers.

Look & Feel

When it comes to tools looks don’t matter much, but like all Bosch Tools they come in a unique blue color with red accents. This device has a heavy duty rubberized edge on all corners with a hard blue plastic and a 38mm Square Back-lit LCD Screen. The LCD is Monochrome and is very easily readable; it also has a sensor that rotates the display when the device is positioned accordingly. There’s a laser beam outlet and a reception lens on the top. It has 10 buttons on the face of the device for different functions and settings. It also comes with a nice protective carrying case that has a belt loop. On the backside of the device, there’s a standard tripod mount, and a fold out positioning pin. On the bottom of the backside, there’s a flap that covers a Micro USB charging point, I’m glad they used something standard and readily available.

The R60 is a digital level attachment, the GLM80 securely locks into the center with a plastic latch. Its made of Aluminum and has a vertical and horizontal bubble level. It’s 24″ long and 2 3/4″ wide and 1″ deep. It also has a hole on one side so you can easily hang or store it.

The Juice

Like I stated early, the unit is rechargeable via a Standard Micro USB Port. In the manual it states that you should not use any other charger. The input voltage is 5v, which is standard for almost all USB ports. The unit itself is powered by a 3.7v 1250mAh Lithium Ion Battery; this should be plenty of power for hours and days of use.

Uses & Functions

Overall the GLM80 is quite the amazing little tool; it has many functions and options that are essential to almost every contractor. With the GLM80, even the smallest of measurements can be accurate. It even has a button to add the additional height of the unit itself. That might sound like a basic function, but when using things like a measuring wheel you never know how many inches you might have gained or lost just form the devices shape and use. With the GLM80 you don’t have that issues, it does all the basic addition and subtraction for you, right on the screen itself.

Functions

  • Length Measurement
  • Area Measurement
  • Volume Measurement
  • Addition & Subtraction
  • Timer Function
  • Wall-Area Function
  • Continuous Measurement
  • Indirect Height
  • Combined Indirect Height
  • Indirect length
  • Angle measuring

The Bosch R60

With the addition of the R60, the GLM80 can be used as a digital spirit level. The R 60 also has a horizontal and vertical bubble for faster indications of calibration just like a stand level. The R60 basically transforms your GLM80 into a high precision and durable all-purpose level. It’s makes the GLM80 accurate down to the Degree.

Accuracy

When testing the GLM80 I came across no issues in accuracy. On Bosch’s website they list the unit accurate down to +/- 1/16″. I found that the GLM80 was truly precise and highly accurate. It’s super fast and worked flawlessly every time, even at its maximum distance. It has a range from 2″ – 265ft. As for the level accuracy its accurate down to +/- 0.2° of variation.

Is it hard to use?

The GLM80 + R60 have almost no learning curve. The buttons are clearly labeled, and within 5-10 minutes, most users will easily figure out the majority of its essential uses without even reading the manual. Overall I think this tool is for Professional, but don’t be afraid if you are the average consumer looking for the ultimate laser measuring and leveling tool.

Why should you buy it?

The GLM80 is a super precise piece of equipment and is ideal for drafting quick, easy and accurate measurements. It’s a time saver, and when a contractor can save time, they save money. I think the GLM80 is a good investment for all contractors and that every working crew should have at least one. The R 60, on the other hand, is just icing on the cake. When accuracy is a must, you just can’t get a more accurate measurement of angle then this. For home users, you might not find too many uses for either of these tools unless you’re currently rehabbing your home or office. It makes measuring for flooring, wall area and volume a breeze.

Conclusion

Bosch has pulled out all the stops on the GLM80. It’s sophisticated, complex, and easy to use. It is the ultimate companion for every contractor or do-it yourself-er. I give the GLM80 + R60 5 out of 5.
